Changes to Revision3’s Programming Lineup

on October 27th, 2008 at 11:18 am by Jim Louderback in Announcements, Shows

As any student of media knows, birthing new media can be a tremendously fun, engaging and rewarding endeavor, but it’s also rarely a straight shot to success.

15 years ago we were posting magazine articles to the web; fast forward to today and it has morphed into blogs, Twitter and Facebook.

You’ve got to try a lot of different things to figure out what works. And the metrics for success also shift as the medium evolves. What’s right in the beginning often isn’t the best long-term solution.

We’ve had a number of great successes here at Revision3, including Diggnation, Tekzilla and The Totally Rad Show. But not everything pans out. Just as in the past, when we ended shows that just weren’t building audiences or driving revenue, we had to make changes. As you may have heard, today we had to make some tough staffing decisions as we ended the run of a few of our shows.

For our long-running Photoshop show Pixel Perfect, it’s the end of a show that’s done over a hundred episodes, and delivered essentially a graduate level course in graphic design and technique. For PopSiren and Internet Superstar, it’s the end of 2 shows that had great promise, but never really found their audience.

For two of the shows, we’re simply stopping our distribution agreement, but the shows will live on. You’ll still be able to watch Epic Fu, and Wine Library, both at their own sites, and through new and existing distribution partnerships. Epic Fu will be available on Revision3 through mid December, Wine Library ends its Revision3 run today. We remain huge fans of these two shows, even though they don’t fit our long-term plans at Revision3.

All past episodes of these shows, as well as all other shows no longer in production, will still be available for download from Revision3.com in our show archives.

Even though we’re sad to see these shows end on Revision3, in today’s economic climate it’s essential for us to focus on what we do best, and where the best opportunity for success lie.

We’re continuing to develop and invest in new properties. We launched seven new shows last month, for instance, on Revision3 Beta, and we’ve got high hopes for an expanded lineup there – and seeing some of that first crop graduate to Revision3.

We’ll be talking more about 2008 and plans for 2009 over the coming weeks. Until then, join me in thanking these show teams for bringing their insight and entertainment to Revision3, and wishing them well in their new efforts.

Wait…? You’re ending PixelPerfect, PopSiren and Internet Superstar yet shows like the frickin’ Digg Reel and XLR8R TV are kept in the line up. Well now Rev3 has about 4 or 5 good shows instead of 7 or 8.

I see why you might have ended PixelPerfect because it doesn’t seem to fit into the whole Rev3 image but PopSiren and Internet Superstar? They were classic, original great Rev3 shows!

    cprincipe Says:

You know, you might want to consider updating your features on your front page before you release this news so that I don’t see 60% of the screen real estate taken up by an ad for a cancelled show.

  3. 03

    BenKing Says:

Cancelling PixelPerfect is ridiculous. This is your own fault. You demanded that its production be moved from PixelCorps to your own studio, you ruined the show with the weird zoom-ins and poor screen capture, and now you can’t afford to produce it anymore.

Can you please offer the show back to PixelCorps? I’m sure they’d actually put EFFORT into producing PixelPerfect.

I will really miss these shows.

Great shows, sorry to see them go!

    the last poster is right…
your ending PopSiren and Internet Superstar but keeping XLR8R TV, hak 5, the digg reel? are you guys on crack or something. you know more than anyone content is king in this business, and popsiren and internset superstar has 100 times as much entertainment value than the digg reel and hak 5. I can see dropping PixelPerfect and epic fu.. kinda.. epic fu never really fit, and pixelperfect had a very narrow audience appeal, hell i can even see letting wine libary tv go… although its awesome and i will continute to watch it as i did before he was part of rev3. but.. popsiren and internet superstar was to me fundimentals of rev3 just liek diggination and tekzilla is. hell i would trade out TRS for popsiren anyday. I understand the market probelms but if you want to survive I think you need to reevaulate what viewers want more than you are doing right now.

I’m very disappointed in Revision3 right now! Popsiren and PixelPerfect are my two favorite shows!!!!!

I really hope you don’t get rid of Sarah or Marty!!! They are the funniest and have wonderful on screen personality.

I’m turning 30 this year and they are still my role models!

    :(

    This sucks!!!

    guitar3dt Says:

I hate to see Internet Superstar go as I hated to see Infected and Gator go… I hate to see Martin Sargent and Jay Spieden go. Epic Fu was new, but I actually was growing to love it, and also hate to see it go. This is a bad day for Revision 3. I hope they will still be working at the company in some capacity.

    BadServo Says:

While I too am saddened by the choice to cancel Internet Superstar & Popsiren, I do have a recommendation. If the shaows are to be no more, and economic troubles are partly to blame, why no auction off set pieces from the 2 sets on EBay to get a lil extra cash in the ole’ Rev3 piggy bank. While I’m not delusional enough to expect huge selling prices, every lil’ bit helps right?

  10. 10

    slonkak Says:

PopSiren, in my opinion, was better before the change in format and the firing of Neha. Now it’s just stupid San Fran music for 20 minutes. I want the old PopSiren back.

Pixel Perfect, while a good show, was never really for me because I don’t use Photoshop. However, I can see how many PS users are peeved.

Internet Superstar, while I didn’t watch regularly, was interesting when there were guests who I knew. Marty is good, I just don’t like over-acting. Sometimes I just shake my head and go watch something else. But, like before, I can see the other side of the argument.

I’m not sure what Rev3’s long term plans are, but from all of the changes happening in the past year, I don’t think they know either. And if they keep canceling shows I like, I’m not going to care about any of their plans.

    I’ll miss the shows.

    Thats all I’m saying

    Rchapoteau Says:

Glad Ifanboy is sticking around. I knew TRS and Digg were going to stick around, but I was afraid it might have gotten the boot.

I had never once watched any of the other shows that are getting the boot. They just don’t appeal to me.

  13. 13

    macinjosh Says:

poor choice of shows to cancel. should have picked the crappy shows that no one watches.

  14. 14

    artfuldodga Says:

i have to say none of this comes as a surprise, if revision3 wants to be successful, they are going to have to drop bad hosts and kick it into high gear with newly hired blood and create some unique but familiar stuff that appeals to everyone like perhaps their own weekly or bi weekly half hour/hour sitcom… just one thing, it can’t suck, it can’t always be about the internet etc.

good luck Rev3, i’m still behind you.

  15. 15

    ChrisGilmore Says:

I wonder if Alex would pick up PixelPerfect as an official PixelCorps production - they have experience making the thing and it would seem to be much better in their line-up of shows.

    kevleviathan Says:

Methinks you guys cancelled the wrong shows.

  17. 17

    techtubeunleashed Says:

Is their any chance any of these shows will be coming back if the economy fixes out?

  18. 18

    cowboyeagle05 Says:

Slow your rolls guys/gals Rev3 is only canceling shows that so far had not found large enough audiences even inside the smaller tech audiences. I loved PopSiren but also as a person studying to produce internet media PopSiren just was not there yet. Pixel Perfect was great but Rev3 did not ruin it nor should we suggest they don’t care about the show. They looked at their numbers and had to decide what was bringing in and what wasn’t and while some of you think DiggReel is not your thing there is a lot going on there. Some shows are hit from the beginning others need time to work out the kinks and find their audiences. DiggReel at the beginning was rough but its quite good now.

Also some of the shows staying on run themselves like EpicFu, XLR8RTV, Wine Library have been in production on their own for awhile and brought a large audience with them when they partnered with Revision3.

Time is not on Revision3’s side right now. They have to tighten down the hatches and work to develop internal value in how the network runs during the current world financial collapse and when they come out this unstable time. After the election we should all look forward to more stability in US markets and work towards recovery cause elections always cause unsure feelings about the future. I would rather Revision3 last through this terrible time then collapse from trying to carry too much load. Good Luck Revision3 I’ll keep watching if you keep being yourself!

  19. 19

    vash Says:

Wait why is Gary leaving? I thought he was good friends with Rev3? It seems not a lot of people are happy Louderback with this decision. Unfortunately not all companies are immune to layoffs, sorry Rev3.

I’d hate to see Internet Superstar go because it’s brought some interesting content to the floor but Martin and Jay will eventually find their footing.

Interested to see what happens in the future.

  20. 20

    lubo Says:

Wow, that’s great. So, because of this “economic crunch” you put incredibly talented people that made these shows great out of work. Tell you what, why don’t the bigwigs take a bit of a pay cut instead. Even 20%…that’s not much conidering how much you already make…but I’m sure that won’t happen. So with that said, enjoy your drives home in your Audi’s and BMWs, and hope that the economy doesn’t take your livelihood away. This is an open letter to all, to just stop watching anything by Rev3…and then when the bigwigs face losing their jobs they can just shit in their pants. That would be cool to watch.

  21. 21

    xfuuey Says:

    *(@#$&*(!. crap.

It’s about time you’re canceling some shows, IMO, but I think there are some others that need to be reevaluated instead.

I’m also not a big fan of the rev3beta shows…. guess I’m the only one.

Anyway, thanks for helping me pass my work week Rev3 :)

  22. 22

    Danielrh9 Says:

I know the financial craphole we’re in right now sucks for everyone, but I won’t pretend that it’s a proxy for an excuse this time. Granted, I do think you guys were over reaching with some of your shows. But I agree with many of those above. You’re simply canceling the wrong ones.

I’m especially pissed over Internet Superstar. You guys claim that it “didn’t find an audience”. Well guess what? You didn’t let it! You only REALLY promoted it once when Martin did a show before a live Diggnation. And you screwed around with the format so much that it wasn’t even the same show as when it began.

I still love what you guys do, but you’re turning into FOX. You screw around with stuff so much and frustrate your audience while doing so. Then for whatever reason, you can’t seem to put two and two together when those shows no longer have an audience.

Gator said it best. EAT A DICK, LAUDERBACK!!

  23. 23

    TheRedMonkey Says:

While I am a fan of Martin Seargent, Internet Superstar was unwatchable at times. I was not a fan of PopSiren but I was also not part of the target audience to begin with. We do not know the details of the shows being dropped but of course they are doing what is best for business.

As long as TRS and Scam School and iFanboy stick around I am happy.

  24. 24

    GraphicsG33k Says:

Wow, just wow Rev3. Three of the shows that I subscribe to are cancelled. So now all I have is Diggnation and TRS. I would love to see how you guys came to the conclusion to cancel these shows. PixelPerfect had its niche with alot of people. Although the forums may not have been so active, they didnt really have to be since it was a tutorial show. You are getting rid of one of, if not the best graphic artists in the world. I understand why WineLibraryTV is being cancelled. Although it is a good show, it is not for everyone and it did not have a Rev3 feel. EpicFu is a tremendous show. I discovered more artists and music than any other show and will be sad to see them go. Bad move Rev3. I think you guys should have looked at the other shows before cancelling most of these. Booooooooooooo to Rev3.

  25. 25

    Stefano Says:

Same boat as above, all you guys have me on is TRS. No more WLTV, no more (my favorite show) Internet Superstar. Completely unacceptable…

  26. 26

    nrweaver Says:

you are canceling one of the best shows Popsiren and leaving shows that i will never watch, hak5, Scam School, the digg reel, XLR8R TV, were turning into G4 all over again

  27. 27

    durham4556 Says:

canceling shows is one thing.. but terminateing talent like martain and sarah.. thats what has me totally anti-rev3 at the moment

  28. 28

    GraphicsG33k Says:

You know, why didnt you guys (Rev3) let your views vote? You could have easily put a poll on the front page and the 3-4 shows with the lowest votes would get booted.

  29. 29

    tetfsu Says:

I am REALLY REALLY disappointed in the choice to cancel Internet Superstar and PopSiren. I understand letting Gary V and the EpicFu crew do their own distribution. They will live on, in their own rights, but Why Internet Superstar and PopSiren. Why not get rid of XLR8TR (or however you spell it, it’s not even worth looking up, that’s how little I think of it). Why not drop the Hak.5 show? They were perfectly fine on their own too. I would rather see them go than see Martin, Sarah, Jay, and the rest go. This is just very very disappointing. I already read Sarah is gone, but I don’t know about Marty or Jay. I hope you didn’t get rid of them too, or you’re loosing about 1/3 of your best on air talent with those 3 gone.

I do have to say that this does not make me less of a Rev3 fan and I am not going to go anywhere, I’ll still keep watching TRS, Tekzilla, and Diggnation faithfully. But this will definitely go down as a dark day in Internet TV history.

  30. 30

    glapeire Says:

I guess honor and loyalty are as valued at Revision3 as they were at TechTV. To have Kevin Rose gush on how he was looking forward to hosting the DiggReel with Sara Lane this week only to fire her the next day, is pure evil. Its bad business and very poor public relations. If Mr. Rose pleads ignorance again as he did when stories were dropped or banned from Digg then he belongs with McCain and Palin as frauds and liars.
It amazes me that the people who most of which survived the TechTV to G4 debacle, are doing the exact same thing all over again. Wise up folks, not only is it web 2.0 but it should also be shown a better way of treating people who show loyalty.
    Shame goes to Mr. Rose

  31. 31

    Ovaltine Says:

What a load of bull. Vallywag just put up a really good article about this very instance. Rev3, this is sad that you would pull something like this.

  32. 32

    Danielrh9 Says:

I agree with much of what has been said above. This was tactless and vicious of Revision 3. I lost a LOT of respect for you guys today. And your advertisers just consequently lost my business.

  33. 33

    gobo Says:

I really doubt that Kevin knew this yesterday on Twit, he’s not in charge of day to day operations, if anyone is to blame it’s Louderback he probably let the board (including Kevin) know today before he laid people off.

  34. 34

    ChrisMori Says:

Wow…i mean i would understand Digg Reel, XLR8R TV, pixel perfect (meh)and internet superstar (gayest show fucking ever) but wine library tv and epic fu…you guys just got them and there pretty good shows…

Today is a sad day :( but atleast we still got diggnation, tekzilla, systm, AND TRS!

    toad6s Says:

    Bring back PixelPerfect.

  36. 36

    elliotttt Says:

Wow, really sad to hear about these shows going. Internet Superstar and Pop Siren were two of my favorites right behind Diggnation.

Is Web Drifter still coming back? I think that show was the best one on Rev 3, award worthy even.

    Rabidness Says:

    Eat a dick Louderback!

  38. 38

    manhunt545 Says:

Wow….Why Pixel Perfect?! I can kinda see Pop Siren and Internet Superstar, but PP!. Stop producing the stupid Digg Reel, Best of, and XLR8R shows

  39. 39

    iancampbell Says:

    NO! NO! NO!
I love you MARTIN SARGENT, JAY SPIEDEN, and SARAH LANE! DAMN! Please you guys make new shows at least! Martin and Sarah should do the Digg Reel from now on. Bancroft can stay in London or wherever he went. Well, I still have a lot of respect for you Rev3, and sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Good luck to everyone.

  40. 40

    ChrisGilmore Says:

Ahh… well. Good luck with the rest of your plans Rev3. Hope you survive.

  41. 41

    vst_kills Says:

Kevin and Jay. You both are great friends and I know you were friends with some of the cast you let go. I can understand canceling shows. But I don’t feel that letting go of talent like Martin and Sarah was an okay decision. I would hope that between the both of you you have majority rule on the board but I guess Revision3 may be bigger then I believe. Because I know if it was a company that you guys ran, you would not have let Sarah and Marty go. So let me say I’m sorry you had to layoff your friends. I believe its hard, But I also know that Jay has some experience under his belt and he knows what he is doing. So best of luck and keep the quality content coming! :)

  42. 42

    illuminus86 Says:

I agree with general consensus — regardless as to revenue, you guys definitely seemed to have cut the wrong shows. At least, you guys could have kept Pixel Perfect and cut a couple of the shows you’ve kept around. (C’mon, Digg Reel? XLR8R TV? Scam School?? Really???)

But as far as polling, Rev3 has occasionally asked viewers to take surveys. I’ve done a couple, and felt good about doing them, but I still find it hard to believe that Rev3 had enough metrics about what content was in demand.

The decisions smell of business-suit-types, not good content providers. Epic fail, Rev3.

  43. 43

    ethanam Says:

Today is the day Revision3 died.

  44. 44

    Bulf914 Says:

I agree that both Pop Siren and Internet Superstar were no longer viable to produce, they were much better before the reformatting. I think Pixel perfect was exactly perfect for Rev3 and they are killing that and all their syndicated shows. I think XLR8R and Digg Reel really should be cut they are both stinkers and deserve to be cut. I think that the shows cut were all justified except Pixel Perfect and I hope this means they will bring back Gigaom, and good quality programming and finally cut Web Drifter cause that was almost as bad as Internet Superstar

  45. 45

    ayalan Says:

    You’re doing it wrong.

PopSiren and Internet Superstar were the wrong shows to cut guys :(

    Wrath.

  46. 46

    smorgy Says:

i cant believe you guys cut popsiren and internet superstar. bad decision. yet you keep crap like the digg reel and xlr8r . poor choice

  47. 47

    RyanPT Says:

I know the cuts couldn’t have come easily and they must reflect the ratings, but popSiren was definitely a favourite show of mine and I’m sad to see it go. I do like Martin Sargent, but Internet Superstar did get a bit tedious sometimes.

To be honest… There are other choices I would have made if I was to choose shows to cut, but I’m blind to the numbers behind it all. Tough times for everyone.

  48. 48

    ciggytoo Says:

This is total humbug. First TechTV rolls over and lets G4 have it way with Pixel Perfect (read: canceled) and now the best Photoshop mentor/designer is getting canceled, but you’re keep the other rere shows that (besides diggnation) are pretty much an insult to intelligence. Please, please, please don’t do this to Bert and all his Pixel Perfect fans. Total-freakin’-humbug.

  49. 49

    chevyorange Says:

Internet Supersar and popSiren were two of my faves on Rev3. Diggnation and TRS being the other two. I can’t believe the shows that are staying on - but I’m not CEO.

PLEASE, I plead, do not let Sarah, Martin, Jay just disappear. They all pop and have great presence and I enjoy them so much. They’ve become my hip nerd friends that I’ll never meet but they’re welcomed on my MacBook Pro any day.

Good luck guys, I’m pulling for you… and wherever you pop up you can bet there are a lot of us who will find you and IP in!

  50. 50

    gotspeed1212 Says:

Martin Sargent and the internet supper star i can live with out but come on digg reel and pop siren and pixel perfect are good shows. some just more time for some of the people that haven’t learned about podcasting to find them and they will take off.

  51. 51

    muncle Says:

    What the hell?
You get rid of shows like pop siren and internet superstar (which I admit, Internet Superstar didn’t seem to be doing any good) but you keep trash like The Digg Reel, and possibly Scam School?

Pop Siren, while not my favorite show, was interesting enough for me to watch weekly.

Please, bring back these shows, and cut the crap like The Digg Reel and Scam School.

  52. 52

    achance007 Says:

only shows I watch on a weekly basis is Diggnation and scam school. I use to watch totally rad show, but Jeff is really annoying. He tries to be soooooo over the top passionate about stuff and just ruins it. I was fast forwarding everytime he spoke but it became a pain. So its nice they are clearing house.

  53. 53

    dusanmal Says:

While entertainment shows deserve measuring by the popularity Rev3 have just made a huge mistake with truly informative PixelPerfect and WineLib. These should be part of very foundations of Rev3, the way for people to find you and enjoy you for giving the useful information. And than stay and enjoy semi-informative and pure entertainment staple shows like Tekzilla and Diggination.
I agree with some of posts that this reflects equal short-sightedness as G4/TechTV transfer. You NEED quality content and can’t survive on the entertainment alone.
The only bright spot is that WINELib will definitely survive on its own and that PixelPerfect has a good chance to be resurrected at PixelCore.

By the way, although I follow many Rev3 shows regularly, from the day 1, the only shows I keep copies of for repeated enjoyment are WineLib and PixelPerfect… For a reason. Information rules. Wise up to that…

    I’M RIGHT HERE YOU MORONS.

“Eat a Dick Louderback” is not strong enough of a phrase to describe my feelings……

Revision3 you have just lost my respect…. To me you are now no better than G4…

I knew that they were growing to big to fast…. Why can’t Jay A. be the CEO again?

Over the year, Rev3 has lost so many people that I adored. Everyone think back on all the great hosts and people that are no longer working for rev3.

Much like many of the ancient civilizations…..

Revision3…. You will be your own downfall.

Oh ya, I also only found out about Revision3 after looking up Martin Sargent and trying to find some Unscrewed episodes online……… Thank you for the entertainment over the years….

You were a mentor, a friend, and guide through much of my adolesent life. Your wisdom, and sense of humor will never be forgotten. Some don’t understand your genius. And now you and me, and all your TRUE fans must pay the price for their erogance. It’s a sad sad day for Rev3 indeed.

And I was upset when Gator died….. Multiply that times 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, and you will be close to feeling how I feel.

We’ll see you at the bar

    Quazi Toto[/QUOTE]

Revision3, Do you now really expect me to buy anything from your store when you get it open??? I hope you realize just how big of a mistake you really made… Don’t worry, it will hit you soon enough.

    goldstargun Says:

I can’t necessarily add anything except outrage. You certainly canceled the wrong shows. You’re getting rid of talent that could help you stay afloat in this uncertain economy. Thanks for throwing some great people out in the cold.

My God, it’s TechTV all over again. Apparently no one learned anything.

    “Eat a dick, Louderback!” Indeed.

I was wondering why Web Drifter never really came back. Now I know.

Oh, and I’m with one other poster above - I wouldn’t have even FOUND Revision3 if I hadn’t looked up what the hell Martin Sargent was doing with his time. I’d missed seeing him on TV, and I was insanely excited to discover that he was now working with a lot of other people I once admired. You have HIM to thank for some of your viewership. Never found their audience? I’m right here. I *have* been here for a very long time. Not so much anymore.

  62. 62

    theevilhacker63 Says:

sorry to double post but to the commenter’ stating this is very much like what Techtv did before the whole network went to the crapper yes I do think this is just like that and do agree I would have cut The Digg Reel and XLR8R TV and left the rest.

    vanezra Says:

I can’t believe you cut Pixel Perfect. It was a very good show. I know I’ve learned quite a bit from it. Cutting that while keeping shows the likes of XLR8R and Digg Reel is beyond belief to me. rmkbow Says:

Popsiren got so boring after the format change. It was very interesting and unique with Dr Kiki mixed with same old weblink stuff you can find on other podcasts.

I liked pixelperfect and no doubt Bert is a photoshop master, but his lack of hosting skills bugged me too much, especially when it came to him announcing sponsors.

I actually like diggreel. I dont have a lot of time to watch all the videos on digg.com so diggreel summarizes the best ones (and cuts out the filler parts of the video)

I’m not sure why you guys don’t like scamschool. It’s a fairly unique podcast which you can learn new tricks. It’s much more interesting than Popsiren despite how well Sarah can host.

  71. 71

    jervin Says:

Man, I just started watching Pixelperfect a couple of months ago to figure out how to use Gimp. Bummer, I hope that Bert will be able to go another route to keep his show someplace i can continue to see it.

  72. 72

    FirestoneX Says:

Its not the fact that a few shows were cancelled. It’s the fact that they FIRED the people working on the shows. I can understand if they get a new show (like martin did when Infected got cancelled) but being FIRED is insane. Martin Sargent MADE revision3. Well, Kevin and Alex did most of it. But I first found Rev3 looking for Martin.

Martin Sargent had a bigger hand in making rev3 than Jim Louderback, that’s for sure…. No respect. That’s what this company is turning into. No respect for the talent. No respect to the hard working people who original Rev3 Crew. And no respect for the viewers watching. RevG4. “Internet That’s Plugged In”….. Oh I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

    PacGamer Says:

I’ve actually got to say that I did not like Pixel Perfect, EpicFu, or Wine Library Tv. But PopSiren and Internet Superstar? Sarah Lane and Martin Sargent, the 2 great people from the TechTV times…they were what made Rev3 great.

    dmontgo Says:

I have to say that I agree with the majority of the posters here. It was one thing to cancel some of these shows (I loved Internet Superstar and PopSiren), but another thing to get rid of some of the people who made Revision3 what it is today! Revision 3 started with just a handful of people…Martin and Sarah being among them. They helped build this station to what it is today. Or rather, what it was yesterday. Today it is nothing. I guess I will have more time to go back and watch “old fashioned shows” on something called a TV since I will no longer have anything to watch on Revision3. Why did Revision 3 do all those daily shows and all the beta shows (lets face it…who even watches those beta shows) if they knew this was possibly coming down the pipe. Way to show loyalty to your staff and your viewers. People are right…Revision 3 is just turning into another G4…Yuck. Bye Revision 3, it has been fun, but now it is over.

Please EpicFu & PopSiren is one of the best in my eyes & Diggnation,Tekzilla.I am sorry I like Alex & everything but(The Totally Rad Show)is not that hot & the only reason I watch it is because Alex is on it. But I kinda felt that they were eventualy going to sellout because I have been using digg.com from the begining & when they changed from just tech & science to all news,I said to myself here we go again like the ZDTV/TECHTV/G4 saga & I have been watching patric’s shows ever since ZDTV/TECHTV days & he is one of the best at it in my eyes & ofcourse my favorite Leo Leport & all of the old tech tv peeps & kevin rose was the 1st to teach me how to download a torrent file etc.I love these guys & gals & sorry these show’s are leaving this network, but I am so glad that atleast two of them are still going to be on this network. & I never knew that they had a photoshop show(mybad)PixelPerfect sounds like I would have liked it. I am so going to go back in the archives & watch it. & Sarah Lane is much to hot to cancel in any way( wink-:) )

    minimanjapan Says:

Ever since Revision3 redesigned the layout things have sort of declined. “Best Of” is a horrible idea that just spams up the most recent list. Digg Reel seemed good when it started but has had some horrible hosts. When Sarah and Martin hosted it was actually very entertaining, but I’m assuming they’re not permanent. Hak5 is pretty boring and poorly made.

The only shows I really watch: Diggnation, Scam school, Tekzilla, and TRS

Also, I really miss having the Gazette every wednesday. It was the only show besides Diggnation that I actually looked forward to seeing. Sarah walking around the office with a camera is a lot more entertaining than some of these new shows that you guys keep directing your energy towards.

  89. 89

    miyamotofreak Says:

I wasn’t watching any of those so I can’t complain. I’m not a big Martin Sargent fan and I never got popsiren though I guess it’s not targeted for me. Epic Fu felt like a mishmash of things in the other shows so I understand that one leaving. WineLibrary.tv was a strange though since it feels like yesterday that a big hoopla was made that it was coming to Rev3. I liked the show but I don’t drink wine so I didn’t subscribe. Pixelperfect was cool though. Give it to Pixelcorps, it was one of the shows I always wanted to watch but never had Photoshop.
Anyways as long as TRS, The Digg Reel, iFanboy, and Scam School stay I’m a happy man. I don’t know how those shows are doing per se but I’m very sure TRS is a big success. The Digg Reel has been getting better and better (excellent 12 minute show) and it has the greatest potential growth, iFanboy has a thriving community, and Scam School is just too cool.

  90. 90

    Cyzor Says:

What’s up with all the harsh reactions. You rather have that Jim fired nobody and the whole company goes bust in six months. As far as I know Revision3 never made any profit or at least very little and relies on VC funding. The cash can run out, especially in the current economic climate.
I absolutely hate that good people lost their jobs but if this is necessary to save Rev3 so be it. Maybe they can come back when the economic climate is on the rise again (please Americans who can vote, vote smart, dare I say vote for change). Companies need to make money to pay there employees, so if there is less money coming in because advertisement revenue is on a down turn you can’t pay as manny employees as before.
As for the shows that where canceled. I really never saw a anything in PopSiren, never liked Internet Superstar and stopped following Pixel Perfect (which was a good produced show) because a lack of time. TRS and Diggnation are luckily still going strong. TRS is not produced by Rev3 only distributed and Diggnation is not one of the most expensive shows to shot and edit. All the shows shot in that ridiculous expensive studio are expensive to make because of the crew involved.
I think the expensive studio and the hiring of 30+ people in such a small company where not the best of decisions. But what do I know.

  91. 91

    d0u6funny Says:

I have to say, I’m not too upset that pixel perfect is gone… but internet superstar was classic, and I watched the popsiren bites to get my mac os app fix. And you can’t fire Glenn, diggnation is nothing without the hippie. In my opinion this is a HUGE mistake. I’m sorry you guys can’t find a way to make money, but I’ll gladly buy a REV3 t-shirt or something if that will help?

  92. 92

    bballbackus Says:

I can’t believe some people here, some of you may have liked some of the shows, but obviously Rev3 has the numbers of each show and the shows they dropped were pulling in the least amount of viewers revinue. Also you guys have to remember, some of these shows are being dropped because they don’t appeal to the Revision3 audience, which is generally a techy audience. Also, because of its relation to digg shows like digg reel and diggnation will stay popular. Hak5 is still new and seems to be doing alright, I can say I enjoy the show with some exceptions. This is hardly the day that Revision3 dies.

  93. 93

    betzster Says:

Pixel Perfect is a great show. I’m sad to see it go. Bert is great.

  94. 94

    FirestoneX Says:

To the person who said ” absolutely hate that good people lost their jobs but if this is necessary to save Rev3 so be it”

I argue that the people getting fired are the ones who actually MADE Rev3 what it is today (err yesterday).. So by getting rid of them can only “SAVE” Rev3, the company…. But not Rev3, the network we grew to love.

  95. 95

    phogan Says:

Then I think I am done watching Rev3. I’ve grown bored with System and Tekzilla.

  96. 96

  97. 97

    goldstargun Says:

    In reply to Cyzor:

If the company can’t afford to pay new people, why start an entirely new project that pays even more people than before? Why start something else, when you’re planning to fire the staff that actually made the company that we all know and love?

    It makes no sense.

  98. 98

    wnp22 Says:

Wow. That’s some bravado Kevin, especially after your Diggnation London episode and your solicitation of ’software engineers’ with reference to job openings @ Digg. The economy must be really hurting, hire @ Digg fire @rev3. Bunch of amateurs….

  99. 99

    goldstargun Says:

Not to mention - why start that project and give it to one of the original personalities, when you were going to let him go?

That’s kind of cruel, in my opinion.

If anything should have been cut, it should have been some of the other projects. Numerous examples have been mentioned above.

  100. 100

    TheHumanEclipse Says:

I can understand the cancellations of some shows, but why the firings. I was reading Sarah’s blog when I discovered Revision3 and am sad to see that she’s been let go. She’s too good to not be there. Moujan, Heather and the others are a sad loss as well, but I like Sarah better. Put her back on the Revision3 Gazette, that show was great, had terrific promise and Sarah was well loved on it. Firing her, just like firing Neha, is a big mistake. These are two really great personalities that people want to see.

Digg Reel. You’re not going to convince me that this ignorant show deserves to be kept online. Andrew sucks and so does the show. If anything else, keep the show, but fire Andrew and make Sarah the host.

Honestly, I agree completely with the shows selected to cut. I could barely make it through an episode of Internet Superstar, I guess I’m not a sucker for over-acting. I never got hooked on PopSiren and so am not bothered by it leaving.

Some of these comments are unbelievable. Revision3 has the numbers of these shows and obviously something wasn’t right if they had to cancel them. Just because you watched and enjoyed them doesn’t mean everybody else did.

I’m sure they had real legitimate reasons to cancel these shows, and frankly the only Rev3 shows I watch are Diggnation, TRS and the Digg Reel. Only occasionally do I watch Hak5. I would watch it more if it had higher production values.

I’m also surprised with all the hate around the Digg Reel. I’m a Digg user and find it very entertaining the hear Andrew’s spin on the stories. I honestly think Andrew is one of the more enjoyable hosts Revision3 employs. He looks natural as a host, not awkward like others.

Wow. It really, really sucks that people lost their jobs over this. They are talented people, and I am sure they will land on their feet in due time. But really, people are commenting out of passion and not using common sense. The management of Rev3 is competent and knows where they are making money and where they are not. Also, Kevin Rose shows no bravado in this post because… well, he didn’t post this.

And Digg != Revision3. They get separate funding.

Sarah and Martin git on my nerves. They did not have the on screen chemistry that Kevin adn Alex have or that of Alex, Jeff, and Dan on TRS. Hey I am no video gamer or comic book reader but I love watching TRS. Those guys really have an on screen chemistry that is fun to watch. I am a chick and find myself getting totally annoyed by most of the chicks on Rev3. The only one I find relevant, knowledgeable, and enjoyable to watch is Veronica on Tekzilla with Patrick. SHe actually knows her stuff and has something to say more than how pretty something is. Please hire more chicks like her.

This is a good decision IMO. Martin never really interested me (to random) and Sarah was pretty, but not very unique. Epic fu was ok, but not interesting enough … not current enough. Not too excited with these R3betas though, nothing there that is better than what you let go. But keep trying. Tell Alex to not be so obnoxious and materialistic and perhaps I could stomach to watch TRS … as it is diggnation is a challenge to watch!

  112. 112

    dom Says:

With all due respect Jim, I think the only way to save Revision3 is for you to resign. Not only would it be a huge cost-saving, but you clearly do not have an aptitude for this business.

  113. 113

    tabadachi Says:

    Dear Revision3 and audience,

I’m writing this not to flame bait regarding Revision 3 transitions, but in order to simply express opinion and reason why I recently stopped watching many of your podcasts. Rev3 once was a media host of creative, original shows. Webdrifter and PixelPerfect were such shows. I watched these shows plus more because they had an underground and independent feel to them. No longer was my media dominated by CEO’s, executives, and profit-driven demands.

This all changed after your purchase of a new studio. I see it in your shows. The strict coherence to McDonald-ized, utilitarian production values are evident. Every new episode is streamlined for production. Rev3 hosts read teleprompter and no longer vibrant and charming. Green screens are overused. Content is clearly developed for audience numbers. Shows are canceled for ‘economic’ reasons. We, the audience, know what’s going on here. Revision3 is turning into a podcast distribution giant like FOX and NBC. It’s only a matter of years until it is sold to a bigger media giant, stuffing the pockets of superwealthy peoples.

So what’s in my podcast client nowadays? Very few shows by Rev3. I’m going to be enjoying my other podcasts created by average-joe folks. I sure Rev3 distributes, not produce, forthcoming Rev3 Beta shows. And as far as I can tell, none of those shows are fresh, underground tech shows. Rev3 seems to be targeting the young college age, trendy generation of Macintosh users.

All hail the mighty podcasting corporation of the future, Revision3. She is destined to become a media superpower like FOX, NBC, and TBS.

    For the abandoned Rev3 shows,

-Taidachi (Yes, I suck at writing. Sorry)

  114. 114

    tabadachi Says:

    Thinking more on things…

If Rev3 distribute shows, capital purchase of the studio and equipment will be worthless. Either 1) sell the studio and distribute Rev3 beta podcasts or 2) Produce shows that last for only a year then disappears.

  115. 115

    Bagelsaurusrex Says:

I’m not going to lambaste you guys for doing the logical thing in the midst of another tech crunch. Still — I’m definitely going to miss Martin.

I think the problem I had with Internet Superstar was that, as entertaining as it was, it lacked a central theme. Same with Pop Siren. Both shows seemed to use the same “variety show” equation of occasional interviews, and quirky stuff on the internet. I’ve never watched Pixel Perfect because I don’t use Photoshop that often, but I really, really enjoyed Epic Fu. I’m seriously sad to see it go — it was a nice, original, indie take on web culture.

I’m afraid of where this is going to take Revision 3 as a company, though. Isn’t the web about finding those niche audiences? Who cares if Internet Superstar pulls in 100 viewers — recognize how significant it is that 100 people are appreciating your content.

It seems like Rev3 is moving towards more “professional” programs that aren’t necessarily better. I started watching about a year and a half ago, back when Diggnation had a paid subscription — and I felt like I was part of this really unique audience.

I’m glad your viewership has grown, really. But maybe it’s time to pay a little bit more attention to your users, and a little less attention to your advertisers.

  116. 116

    Harvest Says:

Bummer, man. PixelPerfect was one of the few consistently good shows on this network (and one of three I’ve watched consistently for the past year or so). Lame, lame, lame.

Good luck, Bert. Hope to see you podcasting again soon.

  117. 117

    phoenixp3k Says:

popSiren was a good show, but I lost interest in it. Same goes for Epic Fu. In truth with my schedule being filled with school work some shows had to kick the bucket.

As for PixelPerfect… well I use GIMP. Start a show with that instead.

    scott88008 Says:

Sarah Lane is a force of nature and gifted communicator of tech and pop culture. If a tech news oriented company like Revision3 can’t figure out how to utilize her and make money then you’ve already failed and might as well give up.

    clutch88 Says:

Just picked up a case of Becks the other day to help out Martin and the old shed but I guess that was for naught.

I do really wish some of these metrics were available to the public to see what was going on with Rev3, just network ratings are published out in the open. I understand why they don’t to non-advertisers but it makes some the changes sketchy. Martin and ISS I can understand. But Sarah Lane, Heather Frank and Hippie Glenn (even if he’s still on a freelane basis) were technical talent that clearly were tied to the shows. If Sarah is the executive producer, than who is getting the nod in her place?

I believe it was Arrington at TechCrunch who noted that alot of these startup companies are simply using the economy as an excuse to consolidate the direction of their companies. The idea being that if they fired people out in the open it would appear that the startup is struggling. I wonder how much of this is a business, or an inter-office dynamic these decisions are made on.

I’m sure we will get some leaks on Valleywag from Rev3 staff later on. Then again maybe it was just the numbers game.

    Jaxom92 Says:

I did not watch any of the shows getting “the boot”. However, I do have to wonder about one in particular - Wine Library. Now, I don’t think it quite fit the audience here, but I’m not one to judge. You all probably have a much better idea of what your audience is than one guy. I must say though, after all that advertising and excitement that WLTV was coming to Rev 3 as a distribution partner, it surprises me it was dropped so quickly after becoming such.

Still, I saw something like this coming, with the economy the way it is. Not surprised by the general announcement by any means.

also notice how the ones in charge of making the decisions are still going to be in charge. why is it always the little guy thrown out on his ass when the people in charge can’t handle their sh*t. That’s it. I’ve HAD it with your crappy network. Screw Diggnation. Sure, i used to watch it, but it’s nowhere near as interesting or infotaining as pS or IS. Who cares about Kevin and Alex spanking off over Rose’s so-2007 ATM?

Rev3 just lost a WHOLE lot of heart & soul. Don’t you dare touch Norton and Belmont - they’re the best you’ve got now. Which is great, but you’ve lost too much.

And seriously - how DARE you take off a show that was no doubt inspiring loads of talented young girls to do geeky techy screwy things? “Never found its audience”? What kind of insane, pissy street meth have you been smoking? How many of tomorrow’s young female visionaries did that show inspire? But you kept Diggnation so we could all watch Kevin and Alex fuck off and giggle like drunken morons on camera. Good one.

Fuck Rev3 and fuck you. May Sarah and Martin kick your soulless asses HARD in their next endeavors.

    CookieCat Says:

Wow. I am shocked and dismayed by the lack of tact, maturity, and manners of those of you leaving comments. Sure, I understand your disappointment. But the personal attacks against Jim Louderback and the vitriol against this site are unwarranted.

The industry, hell the country, is in dire times, if y’all haven’t noticed. Pull your heads out of the sand. Every VC in Menlo/Atherton/PA has been calling up their start-up CEOs in the past three weeks and saying “cut costs, NOW. Preserve funding and maybe we’ll let you survive.”

Rev3 had tough choices to make, but regardless of your personal viewing habits, I’m POSITIVE the cuts were made to the shows that were either delivering the worst results, or even worse had flatlined. This is a business. While I believe these guys have a passion for what they are doing, it’s not a hobby or charity.

So get over yourselves. Supply and demand at it’s best. And BTW, people like Jim Louderback are doing their best to make sure the media, in some form, survives. Again, it may have escaped your attention, but the mainstream media is DYING. I’ve worked with Jim tangentally back in his MSM days, and he has a reputation for being a good guy, among people I trust.

Journalists and PR people alike (I belong to the latter category) are fighting to survive a changing profession. Not everything is going to go how we want it to go, and in this new revolution people are going to get hurt and people are going to get left behind. Everything is being reinvented on the fly, meaning we’re trying new things that may or may not work. At least we’re trying.

Heck, I’m unemployed at the moment, so I’m certainly not speaking from some ivory tower. In the meantime, all you consumers want is FREE FREE FREE. You don’t want to pay for anything! So advertising is the savior of the media. Yet when ad dollars go down and things have to get cut, all you do it bitch and point fingers. Look in the mirror. Whose fault is it really? You can’t have it both ways!!

I’m really sorry you lost your shows (but seriously, if it upsets you so much that you have to be so downright ugly, you need a life).

So to everyone at Rev3, I’m sorry to see that you had to make some tough decisions. But I wish you the best of luck and success.

“Sarah Lane is a force of nature and gifted communicator of tech and pop culture. If a tech news oriented company like Revision3 can’t figure out how to utilize her and make money then you’ve already failed and might as well give up.”

Sure cancel the show if need be, but fire her? Fail. Goodbye.

    i22yb Says:

Not so amazingly, few of the comments/complaints above are from Tekzilla and Systm viewers. I guess the true geeks understand economics!

These shows didn’t make it because the number of views/downloads weren’t there to support them, regardless of anyone’s personal feelings. If the viewers aren’t there, then the sponsors won’t be there either! I liked PixelPerfect, but I’m not going to complain because I understand businesses need to make logical decisions and the audience was just too narrow.

The G4/TechTV comparisons are not very fair because the shows being cut are more culture than tech in nature anyways. I see these cuts as more of a shift in focus back towards their tech roots, rather than in the G4 direction.

Go Patrick & Veronica, and a warm welcome to David Calkins!

    wogger Says:

DiggReel probably costs nothing to produce, and while the first few were weak, it has hit it’s stride. Martin and Sarah, while I love watching them and will miss them on Rev3, did a horrible job filling in for Bancroft. At least his banter is on point and relevant.

I can’t say I’ll miss any of the shows except for perhaps PixelPerfect, which I only tuned into occasionally when I need to do some Photoshop work.

    Will_Stutler Says:

you guys fucking suck……you took off two of the best shows you guys got

and you just throw this crap on us…this is so heart breaking, why must you guys keep doing this to us

what will it take to bring it back

    thumpathumpa Says:

I don’t watch Pixel Perfect, winetv, or internet superstar, but I have always watched popSiren. I love having Sarah Lane back doing reporting of websites and such. Please keep popSiren on, but move it back to the original format. As it stands right now, I skip over half the episode because of all the stupid band crap. It was better with Dr. Kiki and the original format!

  143. 143

    Bulf914 Says:

    Heres what I would do:
Cencel: Internet superstar, PopSiren, The Digg Reel, XLR8R, and Web Drifter. These shows were not worth while ventures although Popsiren could have been saved had it not been switched to the new format. I would then bring Revision3 back to it’s roots and produce shows that are informative like Gigaom because there is quality behind that show unlike these useless new ones. I would focus more on quality tech programming and not do nearly as many daily shows because they are not worth the time.

You also all need to STOP blaming Jim, it was probably not his choice for the layoffs and probly was just foced to carry out the Board’s orders. So the board should be getting the hate.

  144. 144

    tgelston Says:

I love how so many of you think, because YOU watched the show, it was a hit and the BEST show on Earth and made Rev3 piles of money. I hate to tell you your sample size is too small. It is a bummer that shows were canceled and if it was what needed to happen to see rev3 continue to be successful so be it. I have to hope that Jim and the board know what they are doing or at least are acting on solid data, probably a bigger sample size than just one.

  145. 145

    Farlander001 Says:

Yeah, I have to voice my support of the general consensus that this is a bad decision.

You keep useless crap like Digg Reel and XLR8R in production, but kill two refreshingly unique shows and fire two of the best hosts that you’ve ever had? If you’re such an expert at this kind of thing, Lauderbeck, why is it that you keep adding Rev3 beta shows and adding new pre-existing shows to your line-up?

This whole decision absolutely reeks of corporate BS.. you spend an ungodly amount of money on a new studio, you throw a ridiculously expensive launch party, Eat a Dick Lauderbeck basically gets paid in BMW’s, and Kevin and Alex go on one off-site (many international) field trip after another - yet, these hard times cause you to kill shows and fire their hosts? Hosts that are beloved carry-overs from the TechTV days, who have massive followings just by themselves?

I agree with what someone said above, that this is just another Lauderbeck fuck-up that is meant to try and fix an earlier Lauderbeck fuck-up.

I also throw in the sentiment about Kevin Rose being totally tactless about all this - he tells people Digg is hiring, he and his shrill-voiced drinking buddy go on field trips to other countries, and laughs it up on Twit two days ago WITH SARAH THERE (you can’t tell me he didn’t know about this shit the day before, when they recorded).. ugh.

I swear, I never thought I’d see the day when I had to declare Kevin Rose = Deuchebag.

    TPNDrew Says:

Fortunately for me I only loose one show, unfortunately it happens to be my favorite in the line-up i download. I have to agree, let PixelPerfect go back, as WinelibraryTV and Epic Fu are doing. If they cant produce it, then at least it will really be for economic reasons. I also have to agree that some of the cancellations were the wrong shows. Consideration should have been given to XLR8T or what ever the hell it is, INternet Superstar was already failing, so letting it go was not so bad. Drop DiggReel. If I wanted to watch youtube, I’d go to youtube. Hak5… I have nothing to say for that. BAd mojo on you Rev3. Bad mojo. I hate to see this company turn into G4. That is unwatchable bullshit. Consider this strike 2 from me.

I can’t believe it… I’m so… I have no words to explain what I think and feel obout this. I’m from Spain and I have watched every episode of the show every week and will definitely miss it. This show was basically one of the reasons that I watch Revision3. Please dont do this…
I need say thanks to Bert for sharing his knowledge and experience with us.I hope Bert goes on to produce the show by himself.

This is unbelievable. You just canceled the only two shows that I come to Rev3 for: Internet Superstar and Wine Library TV. WLTV I can get elsewhere, of course, but Martin and Jay will be sorely missed.

For me there is no longer a reason to come here DAILY as I have been doing for many months now. To me, your most popular show (I believe) is just a couple of clowns sitting on a couch, drinking beer and reading news stories from another website. I would rather do the drinking and reading myself, thank you very much.

Not sure what else you are hanging your hat on but I see nothing else here for me.

  153. 153

    [wolfman] Says:

Im not sure if this has been suggested before, and i know it may not be popular with a lot of you, but i would be happy to pay a small (eg £5-£10 per month) charge to watch revision 3 programming (obviously this would depend on the quality of the programing, but im sure this fee would help make quality shows).

    Secret Steve Crumbles Says:
