I've got the Enterprise evaluation version running in a VMware Workstation container. On the surface, at least, it looks and acts like almost a carbon copy of Vista. But it does seem pretty easy on system resources (keep in mind I haven't made it do a whole lot, though).
As for recommending W2K8 over Vista, for companies that may be a good move, but for the home user I don't think so...the price page I read lists the cheapest version as "Standard" at a price of $999 (there is a web server only version that is *only* $469, but I'm assuming its a striped down version that is going to only function as a server...I may install that one in a VM and play with it too). And even for the average company, I have a feeling staying with XP or 2003 is still going to be the best move...2008 isn't a cheap upgrade.
This also shows how much faith I have in Microsoft...I have their newest OS that specializes in virtualization itself running in a virtual machine so it can't break anything that matters. I'll have to create a virtual machine within a virtual machine...if that ain't the sign of a truly insane geek, I don't know what is :D

Along with the OS' efficiency, w2k was the only OS that not only fit on the tiny 4 GB primary SSD, it also was the only one that left me enough room on the primary drive for my entire essential software suite with room to spare. For me to even try w2k8 on the Eee PC 900, it'll have to demonstrate the same level of efficiency as w2k has already clearly demonstrated.
Enough with the bloatware already! Just give us an OS that has minimal bells & whistles, and which was NOT designed by an egotistical marketing team with delusions of grandeur! :)

w2k8 is supposed to be back in that venue of sleakness again. I have deownloaded the demo from ms itself but have not installed it. A lot of people are recommending win2k8 over vista.

"I'm just upset that Veronica and Patrick were not watching this week's Totally Rad Show before shooting, as they would know that ASUS is not pronounced like Ace-Us,but more like Ah-Sue-ss...
Ok, ok, I understand scheduling and all...but don't let it happen again. :D"
Yeah, scheduling. TRS is released the same day we shoot. Not quite enough time. ;) Though I saw that TRS ep later too, and had the same thought.

I've evaluated different operating systems when I produced my review of the Eee PC 900 for my YouTube channel ( *link*
Of the two ultraportable computers I currently own, the Fujitsu LifeBook U810 loaded with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is still my favourite. Incredibly compact, long battery life, and a real mechanical hard drive.

"You forgot British Standard Whitworth buttload. They look like normal SAE/British but are different.
Great to hear some reality, tuning Windoze is a marginal effort that takes lots of time and yields little. To really tune a box, install Linix on it."
I agree, but I would like them to review tinyxp and or tinyvista. Microsoft would probably have a cow.
We have been Microsoft free for 4 years now.
